‘Cause the times, they are still a-changin’

今回の企画にあたり、主として意図したことはオリジナル・マスター(テープ)に可能な限り忠実な状態でのデジタル化です。そして、それと連動したオリジナル・アルバムのレコードの再発です。経年劣化(自分も)していくマスター、音源も映像もいつまでしっかりと再生できるのか保証はできません。それはハード(テープ・レコーダー、ビデオ・デッキ)の問題も並行しています。写真のネガなども含めれば、多くのものが遺っています。ハイレゾ、4Kなど、デジタル・フォーマットの進化も目覚ましいものがあります。どこまで、どのように残せるか、今はやれるところまでとお伝えしておきます。

未来がどうなっている(いく)のか、その先まで、ミッシェル・ガン・エレファントの時代が、いつまでも、どこまでも繋がっていきますように。マイクやカメラの向こうの音や色は、鮮明なまま変わらず、時代を超えて突き抜けていきますように。

In 1995, the year THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT’s first album was recorded in London, the Internet began to spread widely. Mobile phones rapidly followed, and then the era of smartphones.  From vinyl records to CDs, and then to streaming and subscriptions…

‘Cause the times, they are still a-changin’

For this project, the primary intention was to digitize the master (tape) as faithfully as possible. Vinyl reissue of the original album also comes in conjunction to that.  As the master deteriorates over time, like myself, one cannot guarantee how long the audio or video will play properly.  The same goes for the hardware such as tape recorder and video recorder.  Many things are still in existence, including photo negatives.  The evolution of digital formats, such as high-resolution audio and 4K, is remarkable.  I don’t know how much or how we will be able to preserve them, but for now I’d like to tell you that we will go as far as we can.

No matter what the future holds, may the era THEE MICHELLE GUN ELEPHANT continue to live on, forever and wherever. May the sounds and colors beyond the microphones and cameras remain vivid and unchanged, and penetrate through the ages.
